A Cycling Legend

Marshall W."Major" Taylor, a trailblazing African American cyclist, rose to international fame in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1878, Taylor began his cycling career at a young age. Despite facing significant racial prejudice, he quickly demonstrated exceptional talent and determination.

Taylor's most notable achievement was winning the world professional sprint championship in 1899. This victory made him the first African American world champion in any sport. His success challenged racial stereotypes and inspired countless athletes of color.
